چکیده

For a fixed graph H, let H-CON denote the problem of determining whether a given graph is contractible to H. The complexity of H-CON is studied for H belonging to certain classes of graphs, together covering all connected graphs of order at most 4. In particular, H-CON is NP-complete if H is a connected triangle-free graph other than a star. For each connected graph H of order a t most 4 other than P4 and C4, H-CON is solvable in polynomial time.

Partitioning Graphs into Connected Parts

The 2-Disjoint Connected Subgraphs problem asks if a given graph has two vertex-disjoint connected subgraphs containing prespecified sets of vertices. We show that this problem is NP-complete even if one of the sets has cardinality 2. The Longest Path Contractibility problem asks for the largest integer ` for which an input graph can be contracted to the path P` on ` vertices. We show that the ...

On graph contractions and induced minors

The Induced Minor Containment problem takes as input two graphs G and H, and asks whether G has H as an induced minor. We show that this problem is fixed parameter tractable in |VH | if G belongs to any nontrivial minor-closed graph class and H is a planar graph. For a fixed graph H, the H-Contractibility problem is to decide whether a graph can be contracted to H. The computational complexity ...

Edge Contractions in Subclasses of Chordal Graphs

Modifying a given graph to obtain another graph is a wellstudied problem with applications in many fields. Given two input graphs G and H, the Contractibility problem is to decide whether H can be obtained from G by a sequence of edge contractions. This problem is known to be NP-complete already when both input graphs are trees of bounded diameter. We prove that Contractibility can be solved in...

Matching and l-Subgraph Contractibility to Planar Graphs

We study the computational complexity of graph planarization via edge contraction. The problem Contract asks whether there exists a set S of at most k edges that when contracted produces a planar graph. We work with a more general problem called P -RestrictedContract in which S, in addition, is required to satisfy a fixed MSOL formula P (S,G). We give an FPT algorithm in time O(nf(k)) which sol...

Contracting Bipartite Graphs to Paths and Cycles

Testing if a given graph G contains the k-vertex path Pk as a minor or as an induced minor is trivial for every fixed integer k ≥ 1. However, the situation changes for the problem of checking if a graph can be modified into Pk by using only edge contractions. In this case the problem is known to be NP-complete even if k = 4. This led to an intensive investigation for testing contractibility on ...
